"El Digresionario poético de todas las diversidades de metros es un importate tratado de poética y retórica compuesto en Alcalá de Henares en 1591 por el licenciado Mesa del Olmeda, a quien se identifica con el maestro Sebastián de Mesa, cura en la Iglesia Magistral de los Santos Niños San Justo y San Pastor de Alcalá de Henares. El tratado no llegó a ver la luz; se conserva solo el original de imprenta, aprobado por Alonso de Ercilla. El manuescrito, completo y en perfecto estado, se conserva en el Bancroft Library de la Universidad de California en Berkeley. Esta edición ofrece una ciudada transcripción del texto con su correspondiente aparato crítico y una anotación minusiosa que elucida completamente los centernares de alusiones, citas y fuentes alegadas por Mesa del Olmeda. Su preceptiva métrica supone, además, un involuntario canon poético que se analiza en detalle. Precede a la transcripción anotada un ciudado estudio que sitúa la obra en el contexto de la historia de las preceptivas castellana, ofrece una impecable propuesta de autoría y analiza las fuentes y las posibles influencias del tratado"--Page 4 of cover. |

Unpublished treatise on poetry. Divided into six "digresiones," each further divided into "paradojas." Contains numerous quotations from and references to other poets and writers. Fol. 1 (as numbered) contains a "Catalogo de los escritores y philosophos con otros autores de quien se ha aprouechado el autor de este volumen," which lists alphabetically ca. 500 authors ranging from the poets of antiquity and the Fathers of the Church to writers of the late 16th century. The list does not include Lope de Vega, which suggests that the manuscript was written before ca. 1615. This treatise was probably intended to be printed; at the end there is an "aprobación" signed by Don Alonso de Ercilla. Cf. Díez Fernández for further discussion of contents and authorship. |
