La hipótesis de este libro es que la violencia es una fuerza social que dota de estructura y significado a la realidad, que genera poder y se confunde con el. La autora propone el definición de "violencia modernista" caracterizada por elementos paradójicos: el vínculo entre el pensamiento y la emoción, la relación con lo sagrado, el trabajo sobre el cuerpo de la víctima y la centralidad de la figura del agresor. El libro analiza en detalle las violaciones masivas en Bosnia, el comportamiento de los terroristas suicidas y la violencia contra las mujeres. Se cierra con una reflexión sobre la capacidad de la sociología para identificar con precisión las circunstancias que favorecen la irrupción del mal en la historia. |
