Première monographie en son genre concernant les basiliques romaines, cet ouvrage propose une analyse de l'un des édifices antiques les mieux conservés de la ville hispano-romaine de Baelo Claudia (province de Cadix, Espagne). Face aux trois temples du capitole et au sanctuaire d'Isis, la basilique civile occupe tout le côté sud de la place du forum du municipe romain. Une fouille stratigraphique et de nombreux sondages sous son sol ont permis d'établir qu'elle fut édifiée vraisemblablement entre 40 et 50 ap. J.-C., à l'emplacement d'un grand bâtiment antérieur, probablement augustéen, qui était peut-être une première basilique. L'analyse architecturale de ses structures encore debout et de ses blocs effondrés - notamment ceux provenant des deux étages de sa colonnade intérieure qui séparait la nef centrale des galeries du rez-de-chaussée et de l'étage - nous ont permis de compléter cette analyse et de proposer une restitution vraisemblable de l'ensemble de l'édifice. |
